Champions League round-up

It was a good night for both English sides in the Champions League, with Chelsea and Arsenal notching up routine wins that put them in a great position to qualify for the knock-out stages at the earliest opportunity.

Arsenal won 3-1 at Partizan Belgrade in an extremely hostile atmosphere, with goals from Arshavin stealing the show, while Chelsea rolled Marseille over in a comfortable 2-0 win. The two play each other in a early title clash at the weekend, and after Aresnal’s shock 3-2 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at the weekend, Wenger will be looking to prove that his side have what it takes.

‘Partizan gave us the game we expected - full of commitment, full of power on every break,’ said Wenger. ‘We had a lot of the ball and created a lot of chances.

‘However, we could not kill the game off and then we were always under threat. They came back with the penalty, afterwards we needed to keep the pace high and when we got the second goal, I thought we looked comfortable.

‘For us it was important to win straight away after a big disappointment. It puts us in a good position confidence-wise, Sunday is a big, big game for us. I believe we will go there with a desire to do extremely well.’
