Capello set to gamble on Ledley King

Ledley King looks set to be included in Fabio Capello’s provisional 30-man World Cup squad with the Italian set to gamble on the Spurs defender’s fitness problems.

The 29-year-old suffers from a chronic knee problem which means he can only play one game per week. As a result King hasn’t played for England since 2007 and was widely thought to be too much of a risk in a tournament where the games come thick and fast.

However, with Rio Ferdinand having started a paltry 11 Premier League matches due to back and groin injuries and Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott out of action since March it now appears that Capello will gamble on including King in his provisional World Cup squad next week.

Other names being mentioned to cover centre-back include King’s uncapped teammate Michael Dawson and Everton’s Phil Jagielka. Capello is also reported to have been in contact with Jamie Carragher in an attempt to persuade the Liverpool defender to come out of international retirement. All hands on deck!
