Capello: Rooney will start against Switzerland

Fabio Capello has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will start England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland tomorrow night despite allegations about his private life.

According to reports in a number of tabloids yesterday the Manchester United striker had a four-month relationship with a 21-year-old prostitute while his wife Coleen was pregnant.

There had been suggestions in the press this morning that Capello was concerned about Rooney’s mental state and was considering resting the 24-year-old. However, the Italian confirmed to reporters that Rooney will be in England’s starting XI in Basel.

‘He [Rooney] told me he wanted to play and he will play,’ Capello said. ‘He will also be in a good situation tomorrow. I hope the performance of Rooney tomorrow will be the same as at Wembley. We are focused on the game, not about the private life of the players. We are here to play this game and train very well.’

Capello’s major decision ahead of tomorrow night’s match is who will replace the injured Michael Dawson alongside Phil Jagielka in central defence. Bolton’s Gary Cahill is favourite to get the nod ahead of the more experienced Matthew Upson.
