Capello names John Terry England captain
Fabio Capello has named John Terry as England captain for the forthcoming 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand had been tipped for the role, but the Italian has decided to stick with the player who captained England during Steve McLaren's tenure.
The choice of Terry has ended months of speculation over who would lead the side after the disappointment of missing out on Euro 2008. The decision marks a remarkable turnaround for the Chelsea captain.
Back in March Capello launched a veiled attack on Terry following his treatment of referee Mike Riley in the 4-4 draw with Spurs. While photos of the Chelsea captain's Bentley in a disabled parking space allegedly resulted in the defender losing the England armband.
But with England facing a rematch against Slaven Bilic's Croatia in Zagreb next month, Capello has decided to err on the side of caution and stick with Terry as England captain. Hopefully the results will be better this time round.
