Capello: Beckham too old for England

Fabio Capello appears to called time on David Beckham’s England career. The 35-year-old missed out on a place in the World Cup squad in South Africa after picking up an achilles injury in March.

However, while the LA Galaxy midfielder made it clear that he was still available for international duty, comments from Capello this evening before the friendly match with Hungary suggest that Beckham is now surplus to requirements.

When asked by ITV about Beckham’s England chances Don Fabio replied: ‘I say thank you very much for helping me at the World Cup but probably he is a little bit old.’

Becks made his England debut back in 1996 against Moldova and earned 115 caps scoring 17 goals along the way.

Despite captaining his country in three international tournaments Goldenballs’ most memorable moment in an England shirt is arguably his last-minute free-kick against Greece in 2001 which secured qualification for Japan and Korea 2002.
