Capello announces provisional World Cup squad

Jamie Carragher and Ledley King were both surprise inclusions in Fabio Capello’s provisional 30-man squad for next month’s World Cup in South Africa. The England manager announced the list this afternoon which also included the uncapped pair of Adam Johnson and Michael Dawson.

Sunderland’s Darren Bent and West Ham’s Scott Parker were rewarded for their impressive club form this season, however, there was no room for either Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves or Fulham’s Bobby Zamora.

Carragher meanwhile hasn’t played for England since 2007 but with Wes Brown and Joleon Lescott unavailable due to injury the Liverpool defender decided to answer Capello’s call.

‘The FA got in touch a few weeks ago and asked if I would have a rethink, due to injury problems. I said I would make myself available,’ Carragher told reporters. ‘The World Cup and Champions League are the highest levels of football. I'm not getting any younger, we have no Champions League football next season and I am keen to work under Fabio Capello.’

Capello is also reported to have attempted to lure Paul Scholes out of international retirement to cover central midfield but the Manchester United veteran declined the offer.
