Cannavaro fails drug test

Italy's World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro has failed a drug test. The Juventus centre-back is now being investigated by Ettore Torri, Italy's Olympic Committee's (Coni) anti-doping prosecutor.

Cannavaro, who is suspended for Italy's World Cup qualifier against Ireland on Saturday, tested positive for cortisone which he claims was used to treat a bee sting. According to ANSA, the former world player of the year was administered the cortisone injection on 29 August ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria.

Coni will now have to judge if Cannavaro had the appropriate certification for the banned substance. The failed drugs test could potentially lead to the veteran defender receiving a ban.
