Just as we hoped, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award went to Welsh boxing phenomenon Joe Calzaghe. The Welshman, who was out in Vegas watching Ricky Hatton, has been undefeated in the ring for ten years and is now the undisputed super-middleweight champion of the world.
"It is a shock to win this award but also a tremendous honour,” he said. “It's been a great year for me and hopefully I can have another great year in 2008."
Calzaghe was said to be very disappointed not to have done better last year, when he finished fourth behind the likes of gymnast Beth Tweedle and royal equestrian Zara Phillips.
So in a low period for British sport generally, it’s good to see the public give a true winner the recognition he deserves.
