Bubba blubs after winning Masters

American Bubba Watson won the US Masters in Augusta, as the big names fell away in the final stages. The first major of the year was billed as a showdown between Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Instead it was claimed by the 33 year-old American whose talent has, until now, been undermined by waywardness.

It was almost in evidence again in the play-off with South African Louis Oosthuizen. Using his distinctive pink driver, Watson seemed to be in trouble. He then conjured up one of the finest shots Augusta has seen, hooking out of rough to the green, leaving himself 2 putts to win the Masters. After securing the title, Watson immediately burst into tears.

Watson advanced through the field in the afternoon. "I just kept my head down knowing there were birdies on the back 9," he said. "I just kept going, kept dragging it out and somehow it went into a play-off. I don't know what happened then, except I was crying a bit later."

Woods and McIlroy couldn’t be separated at the end. Unfortunately they were way down the field, finishing joint 40th on 5 over, not the score either would relish. It was Woods’s worst Masters finish as a professional.

Lee Westwood was the best-placed British golfer, 2 shots off the lead. The impression is that he is just a few decent putts away from winning a major. "Unfortunately the weakness in my game is costing me tournaments," he said. "It's frustrating. I can't seem to turn it around at the moment. I know that when I do, the wins will come."
