Britons arrested over Free Tibet protest in Beijing
Two Britons have been arrested in Beijing as part of a group of four protesters who hung up "Free Tibet" banners from a bridge within spitting distance of the Olympic stadium. The three men and one woman were arrested around 5am after local residents had alerted the police.
The protesters climbed up electricity poles on the bridge and unrolled banners with the slogans "One World, One Dream: Free Tibet", "Tibet will be free", and "Free Tibet" in both English and Chinese. It is believed that the messages were on display for over half an hour.
The Beijing Olympics has been shrouded in controversy since March when the Chinese authorities clamped down on protest in Tibet. The Olympic torch relay was also marked by pro-Tibetan demonstrations.
