British football team one step closer

The chances of seeing a British football team at the 2012 Olympics became one step closer with the news that it won't affect the future of the different home nations associations.

The Scottish FA had been against the idea of a British team taking part at London 2012 fearing it could lead to the formation of a UK national side at senior level. But Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke has assured Scottish officials that a one-off British Olympic team will have no effect on the Scottish national side.

Sir Alex Ferguson's name has been bandied about as a possible coach for the Olympic football team, but the idea is still generating hostility amongst a large number of Scottish politicians and footballing officials.
