Briatore could sue the International Automobile Federation

Flavio Briatore has admitted that he is devastated by his lifetime ban from motor sport following an alleged race-fixing scandal and is contemplating taking legal action against the sport's governing body the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

The billionaire Italian businessman was handed the ban for ordering Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash during last year's Singapore Grand Prix.

'I am distraught,' the 59-year-old told the Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport. Reports in Italy suggest that Briatore is set to launch an appeal against the sentence through the Paris courts in an attempt to salvage his damaged reputation.

The Italian's Formula One team Renault received a suspended permanent two-year ban from the sport while former Executive Director of Engineering, Pat Symonds, received a five-year ban for his role in the incident.

According to reports in Italy, Briatore is also contemplating setting up a rival series to Formula One in an attempt to circumvent his life ban from motor sport.
