Brazil 1 England 0

England lost 1-0 to Brazil yesterday afternoon in their showcase friendly in Qatar. Despite the pointless nature of the game it gave Fabio Capello the chance to have a look at some fringe players ahead of naming his final squad for South Africa next summer.

However, none of the fringe players held up their hands with Sunderland striker Darren Bent failing to make an impression. Late injuries to both John Terry and Michael Carrick meant that Wayne Rooney and Gareth Barry were the only regulars in the England starting XI.

Brazil took the lead early in the second half when the pacy Nilmar got on the end of an Elano cross to head past Ben Foster in the England goal. The South American side should have gone two up just minutes later when Foster took down Nilmar in the box. However, Luis Fabiano, underlining Brazil's lack of concentration, lazily placed his penalty over the bar.

If Capello learned anything from yesterday's game it was that England will need to have their all of their first choice defenders fit next summer. The second string back four on show (Wayne Bridge, Joleon Lescott, Wes Brown and Matthew Upson) really struggled against top class opposition.
