Bramble injury blow for Sunderland

Sunderland have been hit by a double injury blow after it was revealed that central defenders Titus Bramble and Michael Turner will be out injured until January at the earliest.

Bramble was due to undergo surgery for a knee cartilage problem earlier today and it later emerged that Turner picked up knee ligament damage during Sunderland’s 2-2 draw with Everton on Monday.

‘It's horrible news,’ Sunderland manager Steve Bruce told reporters. ‘Michael whacked his knee against the post on Monday and damaged knee ligaments. He will see a specialist today. I believe it could be months rather than weeks, and that's a big blow to us.’

Sunderland have been in excellent form over the last month but the loss of their first choice central defensive pairing comes as a hammer blow to the team’s chances of a top half finish this season.

Bruce will have to reorganize his defence with Anton Ferdinand, Ghana international John Mensah and the Paraguayan Paulo da Silva vying for the two central defensive berths.
