Blackpool 4 Wigan 0

Blackpool marked their Premier League debut with a sensational 4-0 away win over an abysmal Wigan side at the DW Stadium this afternoon.

Ian Holloway’s team are favourites to be relegated back into the Championship but they proved their critics wrong today with a determined display against a Wigan team which failed to turn up.

Playing in the top flight for the first time since 1971, Blackpool were 3-0 up at half time thanks to Gary Taylor-Fletcher’s opener and a brace from new signing Marlon Harewood.

Brett Ormerod wasted two excellent chances to put The Tangerines ahead as early as the second minute. It was clear that Wigan’s defence had more holes than a block of Swiss cheese and it wasn’t long before the away side took the lead.

Alex Baptiste scored Blackpool’s fourth in the second half when Chris Kirkland allowed his shot beat him at the near post.

The result and performance would appear to call into question Roberto Martinez’s future as Wigan manager.
