Birmingham City 1 Spurs 1

Tottenham Hotspur's chances of qualifying for next year's Champions League were dealt another blow yesterday when they conceded a late equalizer away to Birmingham City.

Harry Redknapp's side had taken the lead in the second half when Jermain Defoe pounced on a miscued header from team-mate Peter Crouch to score his 17th goal of the season.

However, the away side failed to create any more clear goalscoring chances in what was a scrappy, disjointed and largely forgettable affair at St Andrews.

Birmingham have scored just 10 goals at home all season with midfielder Lee Bowyer the club's top-scorer on just six goals, but unlike Spurs Alex McCleish's play right up until the final whistle.

Just when it appeared that Tottenham were about to pick up an invaluable three points on the road Birmingham left back Liam Ridgewell profited from some terrible marking by Vedran Corluka to volley a Cameron Jerome knockdown past Gomes.
