Birmingham 2 Sunderland 1

Birmingham City got one over on their former boss Steve Bruce with a 2-1 win over Sunderland at St Andrew's this afternoon.

Liam Ridgewell put the Blues 1-0 up eight minutes before halftime when he stole in ahead of Sunderland's rearguard to direct a Sebastian Larsson free kick past Craig Gordon the Black Cats' goal.

Birmingham went 2-0 up three minutes after the break when James McFadden produced a moment of magic. The Scotland international controlled a Cameron Jerome flick before stepping inside Phil Bardsley and curling a shot into the top right corner.

Sunderland pulled a goal back eight minutes before full time when Scott Dann redirected a Michael Turner header into his own net. Steve Bruce's side went close to snatching a point on a couple of occasions with Darren Bent clipping the post with a shot before substitute Fraizer Campbell headed just wide from an Andy Reid cross in the closing seconds.
