Bid backed

It seems that it’s all looking quite good for England’s World Cup bid. Or at least, it is if you believe the throwaway quote that Fifa chucked at us after their four-day visit ‘inspecting’ the facilities and infrastructure of the country.

Frankly how on earth Fifa wasn’t already aware of the football history of the country, the stadiums it has and its infrastructure we don’t know. In fact, it all has the suspicious whiff of an expenses-paid jolly. Still at least they said that ‘a World Cup in England in 2018 or 2022 would be a great experience with a long-lasting legacy’ afterwards. That should make us all happy.

‘Nick Clegg said that football is the glue that brings the country together,’ said Mayne-Nicholls, president of the Chilean football federation. ‘This commitment and passion we have seen in all the cities we have visited.

‘The quality of the pitches was absolutely world class, so was the line-up of celebrities we had the chance to meet (Um, what the hell?).’
