Beckham snubs offer of farewell game

David Beckham is convinced that he has a role to play in England’s qualification for Euro 2012 and will snub any offer of a farewell game from Fabio Capello.

Speaking to ITV ahead of Wednesday’s friendly against Hungary, Capello said that Beckham was ‘too old’ to be considered for international duty but later offered the former England captain the chance of one last appearance at Wembley.

The news came as something of a bombshell for Becks, although he had been informed of Capello’s comments by Franco Baldini on Monday. However, the LA Galaxy midfielder was assured that he would still be considered for competitive games after recovering from injury.

Beckham returned to light training yesterday with the Galaxy and is reluctant to accept the offer of what would effectively be a testimonial game against France on 17 November.

The incident has once again called into question Capello’s ability to deal with the English media. What initially appeared to be a throwaway line at the end of an interview has snowballed into a front-page story. The honeymoon is well and truly over.
