Barry to join Liverpool in cash-plus-player deal
Gareth Barry looks set to join Liverpool from Aston Villa after the two clubs agreed a cash-plus-player deal for the England midfielder. It is believed that Liverpool will pay £17.5m to bring Barry to Anfield with right-back Steve Finnan moving in the opposite direction.
Liverpool have been chasing Barry since the end of last season with the player himself making it clear that he wanted to move to Merseyside. But the deal had looked off after Villa slapped an £18m price tag on the 27-year-old.
The move will bring Liverpool's summer spending to £40m following the purchase of Robbie Keane for £20.3m on Monday. Rafael Benítez will now be under pressure to mount a serious title challenge as Liverpool look to win their first league title in 18 years.
