Barcelona confirm their interest in Fabregas
There was some worrying news for Arsenal fans today after Barcelona confirmed their interest in signing Gunners captain Cesc Fábregas but would be unwilling to pay over the odds for the talented midfielder.
Fabregas started his career at the Camp Nou before joining Arsenal as a 16-year-old and has been repeatedly linked with a return to the Catalan club. Barcelona's sporting director Txiki Begiristain spoke about the club's interest in Fabregas today.
"It depends on how much we want to spend," Begiristain said in the Spanish tabloid Marca. "If we spend a lot of money, it is possible [to bid for Fábregas]. We do not know how much it will be yet. We have not asked Arsenal. If the amount is too high, we will not try."
While Real Madrid have spent over £220m on Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká and Xabi Alonso over the summer Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the only new arrival at the Camo Nou during the off season. Begiristain told reporters that only an exceptional player could add something a team that won the treble last year.
"We find it difficult to improve what we have and that is the reality," added Begiristain. "Improving a team that has won a treble is difficult, and trying to improve dramatically can get you into trouble. Any new player must be compatible with the plans of the coach. Here the views of Pep Guardiola are critical."
