Babel told he can leave Liverpool

Ryan Babel has been told that he can leave Liverpool in the summer after Rafa Benitez decided that the Holland international is no longer needed at Anfield.

The 22-year-old was bought in July 2007 from Ajax for £11.5m but has struggled to find room in the Liverpool first XI scoring just 14 goals in 91 appearances for the club starting just 42 games.

According to the Guardian, Babel's agent, Winnie Haatrecht, sought assurance from Benitez that his client would start more games next season but the Spaniard was unwilling to give any guarantees. Aston Villa, Tottenham and Arsenal are reportedly interested in Babel with the Birmingham club looking like favourites to capture the player's signature in a possible swap deal involving Gareth Barry.
