Avram Grant named Portsmouth manager

Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant has been appointed as Portsmouth manager following Paul Hart's sacking on Tuesday. Pompey are currently bottom of the Premier League table with a paltry seven points from 13 games.

Grant, who had recently returned to the club as technical director, will now face the task of saving Portsmouth from relegation. The 54-year-old coach faces a tough first game in charge when Pompey host Manchester United at Fratton Park tomorrow.

Former Portsmouth owner Milan Mandaric backed Grant's appointment: 'He is the best solution. With Avram, Portsmouth have a very good chance of getting out of trouble.' Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie also backed the former Chelsea coach: 'The board believes he is the man to help steer the club out of the relegation zone.'
