Aston Villa miss chance to move up into second place
Aston Villa missed the chance to move up into second place in the Premier League following a 0-0 draw this afternoon with Steve Bruce's Wigan.
Martin O'Neill's team started well with Gabriel Agbonlahor's pace causing panic in the Wigan defence, but Villa struggled to break down a dogged Lactics side.
Former Wigan striker Emile Heskey had a good chance to put Villa ahead on 40 minutes but he directed his header straight at Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland before defender Zak Knight hit the post with a header early in the second half as Villa piled on the pressure. Despite going close late on through Agbonlahor and Luke Young, Villa dropped two vital points in their chase of a lucrative Champions League place.
