Aston Villa beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1

Aston Villa beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 this afternoon in the Midlands Derby thanks to two first half goals.

Former West Brom defender Curtis Davies opened the scoring when he headed home a cross from Gareth Barry, but it was Villa's second goal which will make the headlines. Former Liverpool keeper Scott Carson somehow managed to deflect Gabriel Agbonlahor's scuffed cross into his own net.

James Morrison got one back for the Baggies in the second half as Tony Mowbray's team looked to snatch a point. But the ever impressive Martin Laursen expertly marshalled the Villa defence to ensure that Martin O'Neill's team moved up into third place, at least until tomorrow when Manchester United take on Chelsea.
