Ashley Young signs for Manchester United

Manchester United completed the signing of winger Ashley Young from Aston Villa yesterday for a fee said to be somewhere between £16-£20 million.

The 25-year-year successfully completed a medical on Friday before putting pen-to-paper on a contract with the current Premier League champions.

Young joined Aston Villa from Watford back in 2007 in a deal worth £10 million and went on to score 38 goals in 190 appearances for the Birmingham club.

However, after establishing himself as a regular in the England squad over the last year, Young made it clear to Villa that he would not be signing a new deal when his contract expired next summer.

As a result the club were left with little choice but to listen to offers for their prize asset. Liverpool had been favourites to sign the winger but instead Young will now become part of Sir Alex Ferguson's rebuilding process at United.

Ferguson had already signed England Under-21 defender Phil Jones from Blackburn for £16.5 million earlier this month as he looks to build a new-look team which will continue to challenge for Premier League and Champions League titles over the next decade.
