Ashley Cole's World Cup heartache

Ashley Cole is facing a race against time to be fit for the World Cup after it was confirmed his broken ankle is worse than initially thought. The first choice England left back fractured his ankle during Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Everton and will be out of action for 3 months, which means he’ll be cutting it close, with the World Cup in South Africa kicking off in 4 months.

Although a definite blow for England it has opened an intriguing door for Wayne Bridge to replace Cole as England left back. All the more intriguing if he is picked by manager Fabio Capello to play alongside his much publicised nemesis John Terry.

We’ll have to wait until June 1st when all countries taking part in the World Cup submit their final 23-man squad going for South Africa to see if Bridge and Terry will be in the same team.
