As you were

After this weekend’s results it’s as you were at the top of the Premier League. Chelsea are still top by one point, after they responded to Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday with a sound 7-0 murdering of Stoke City at Stamford Bridge yesterday.

A hat-trick from Salomon Kalou helped the Blues on their way to the victory, which sets up a tasty clash against Liverpool at Anfield next week, a match which could decide both the title and the Red’s increasingly slim chances of Champions League football for next season. As it stands they are outside the Europa League places in seventh, but only two points behind Tottenham in fourth place, although they and Manchester City do have a game in hand.

For their part, Liverpool hammered Burnley 4-0 at Turf Moor and sent them back down to the Championship, meaning all three relegation places are filled, with them, Hull City and Portsmouth all playing second division football next season.

‘It's important that our destiny is in our own hands,’ Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti said. ‘I don't know why I should feel any pressure now. Sir Alex says it is ours to lose and that is right. But that's a good thing. To have it in our own hands is better.

‘I am quiet and calm now. I think United will be able to win their last two games. They have Sunderland and Stoke, and every game is a different story, but our aim is just to win our own matches. If we do that, we are champions. Liverpool will be a very difficult game. They are a fantastic team and they are still going for fourth place, so they will want to fight against us. Them finishing fourth is very important for the future of their club, but I just hope we play at Liverpool like we did today.’
