Arshavin deal in doubt over wage demands

Arsenal's protracted attempt to sign Russian midfielder Andrei Arshavin looks to have hit a snag over the Zenit St Petersburg player's wage demands. The Guardian reports that the two clubs have agreed a fee of £15m for the 27-year-old, but Gunners' boss Arsene Wenger has denied that a figure has been agreed.

"It is not true a fee has been agreed. We are not close to concluding any transfer, Arshavin or anybody else. At the moment it is all quiet," Wenger told reporters. "For me, it is of little interest. I can understand that when the transfer window is open, it makes headlines."

Despite Wenger's apparent indifference, sources close to the North London club have said they hope that the Arshavin deal can be concluded before the end of the January transfer window. The Russian international appears to have burned his bridges with the Uefa Cup winners, but his £100,000 per week wage demands could put his move to the Premier League in doubt.
