Arsenal set their sights on Stekelenburg

Arsenal will set their sights on Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg if they fail to sign Mark Schwarzer from Fulham ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

The Gunners have had two bids of £2m for the 37-year-old Australia international rejected in recent weeks as they look to replace the error-prone Manuel Almunia.

However, Arsene Wenger is reported to be reluctant to spend more than £2m on Schwarzer and is instead looking at Stekelenburg who impressed at the World Cup where he helped Holland reach the final.

The Dutch international, who is ten years younger than Schwarzer, has been Ajax’s No.1 since 2001, making 165 appearances for the Amsterdam club to date.
