Arsenal look to sign Xavi Alonso from Liverpool
Arsenal have made a bid to sign Xabi Alonso from Liverpool according to reports in the English press. But the Gunners are hoping that Liverpool will lower their asking price of £18m for the former Real Sociedad play maker.
Arsène Wenger wants to pair Alonso with his compatriot Cesc Fábregas in the Arsenal midfield. The 26-year-old Spaniard has been told that he can leave Liverpool for the right price as the Merseyside club look finally set to sign Gareth Barry from Aston Villa.
Alonso had been linked with a move to Serie A club Juventus as Liverpool looked to raise funds for the Barry deal. The Aston Villa captain now looks certain to join the Reds after Martin O'Neill made it clear that the England midfielder is free to leave providing that Liverpool meet the Birmingham club's £18m asking price.
