Arsenal qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a dramatic win on penalties over Roma at the Olympic Stadium in Rome last night.
Roma went ahead on nine minutes through their Brazilian centre-back Juan after some comical defending at the back by Gallas and Toure. The goal levelled the tie on aggregate but from that point on both teams struggled to play with any continuity or fluidty although van Persie was guilty of wasting a number of half chances.
After 120 minutes of tense football the place in the quarter-finals was decided by the lottery of penalty kicks. But not even penos could divide the two teams, with even the spot kicks going to sudden death. Max Tonetto was the villain on the night, skying his penalty high into the Roman sky to hand victory to Arsenal.
