Arsenal beat Aston Villa 4-2

Arsenal beat Aston Villa 4-2 yesterday afternoon at Villa Park to move into second place in the Premier League.

The Gunners coasted into a 2-0 lead at the break thanks to late first-half goals from Andrey Arshavin and Samir Nasri.

However, midway through the second half it looked as if Arsene Wenger’s side were set to throw away yet another two-goal lead.

Villa hit back with two second-half goals from Ciaran Clark to set up a nervy final quarter. Although Marouane Chamakh had scored Arsenal’s third either side of Clark’s brace, the game wasn’t settled until Jack Wilshere’s 90th minute goal.

Arsene Wenger must have feared another capitulation from his team just eight days after they threw away a two-goal lead at home to Tottenham, but ultimately it was Villa manager Gerard Houllier who was left to reflect on what might have been.

‘We never got started,’ Houllier said. ‘In the second half it was a different team. We showed more energy, took more risks and were more daring in what we wanted to achieve. But we have to be honest – we were beaten by the better team.’
