Argentina offer Maradona a new four-year contract

Maradona looks set to be offered a new four-year contract by the Argentinian Football Association despite his team crashing out of the World Cup in a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Germany.

The AFA met earlier this week to discuss the 49-year-old’s future and decided to offer him the chance of leading the national team to the World Cup in Brazil in four years time.

Maradona is revered in Argentina after leading his country to victory in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, however, his appointment as manager of La Albiceleste in 2008 raised some eyebrows.

The former Napoli player had no previous coaching experience and his life since retirement has been punctuated by numerous personal and health problems.

It now remains to be seen if Maradona will accept the offer to stay on as national team manager. In the immediate aftermath of the crushing defeat to Germany he told reporters ‘I may leave tomorrow.’

But the pint-sized legend later added ‘We will see what happens. I haven't thought about leaving. I have to check that with my family and the players and there are things I have to consider.’
