Another City target

Just in case there was any doubt that Manchester City were dead set on collecting a squad genuinely capable of challenging for the Premier League, then that would have been blown away by today’s news that they would be prepared to break the British transfer record in order to bring Fernando Torres to the club.

Torres has been linked with a move away from Merseyside ever since the end of Liverpool’s desperately poor season, with both Chelsea and Barcelona interested, but Liverpool’s valuation of £70million seems to have scared them off. However, City might be prepared to at least go a lot closer than the others, and top the £32.5million they paid Real Madrid for Robinho.

‘Torres is one of the best strikers in Europe and is already playing in the Premier League for three years and knows it very well,’ said City boss Roberto Mancini. ‘But it depends on his situation – his price and whether he wants to come.

‘There are two or three strikers that we could go for, but it is the same situation as it is with James Milner. First there is the price and then it depends if the players want to change team. Until today, Liverpool haven't bought many players.’
