Ankle injury threatens Gareth Barry's World Cup chances

Gareth Barry could be set to miss the World Cup in South Africa next month after picking up an ankle injury during Manchester City’s 1-0 defeat by Spurs at Eastlands on Wednesday.

The former Aston Villa midfielder has been an integral part of Fabio Capello’s England team and looked set to be central to the Italian’s plans in South Africa.

According to the Daily Mail Barry suffered ankle ligament damage during the crunch Premier League clash with Spurs and has told friends that the injury is more serious than initially thought.

Barry’s injury would leave Capello without his first choice holding midfielder but it could open the door for Manchester United’s Michael Carrick, West Ham’s Scott Parker or the uncapped Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone.
