Andy Murray into the second round of the Australian Open

Andy Murray has gone through to the second round of the Australian Open after his opponent Karol Beck retired through injury in the third set.

Murray was winning 6-3, 6-,1 4-2 and well on the way to a straight-sets victory when the Slovak Beck pulled up with an injury to his right shoulder. However the Scot didn’t have it all his own way, as Beck pushed the Scot hard in both the first and second sets, pulling out some extremely good shots.

‘I started well,’ he said. ‘Wasn't great at the end of the first set, then played better in the second. He's a very talented player, and just started throwing everything at me. He went for some huge shots. I just had to weather the storm - and obviously you'd rather finish the match off without your opponent being hurt.’
