Andy Murray crashes out of US Open

Andy Murray suffered a humiliating exit from the US Open early this morning, after being beaten by 25th seed Stanislas Wawrinka 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (6-4) 6-3 6-3 in the third round, letting another charge at a major title slip through his fingers.

At one point Murray was serving for a two-set lead, but soon after began to rapidly deteriorate physically (spasms in both quads at a very bad time) and mentally, making countless unforced errors and allowing Wawrinka to make light work of the Scot in the third and fourth sets.

‘He played better than me,’ said a dejected Murray after the defeat. ‘There's not a whole lot more to it. He had a chance to win the first set; didn't take it. I had a chance to win the second set; didn't take it. I just struggled from then on.

‘I was disappointed that I was struggling physically. I tried to find a way to come back. Didn't quite do it.’
