André Villas-Boas: 'I could drop Torres'

Chelsea boss André Villas-Boas has said that he would have no qualms about dropping Fernando Torres, should his lack of goals 'compromise' the team's performance. The poor guy is going to be spending a lot of time on the bench, on that criteria.

The Spaniard has scored only one goal in 21 games since he was signed from Liverpool for £50million in January, and with Didier Drogba and Daniel Sturridge champing at the bit for first team football, Torres could find himself marginalised. Not only that, but he wasn't even on the bench for Spain for their match against Liechtenstein. It's not looking good, is it?

'It can never compromise the objectives of the team and the things you want to achieve,' said the Chelsea manager. 'It's not just about scoring goals, it's about creating opportunities and he's been doing that. The moment when it compromises the running of the team I think it has to come to an end.

'You don't lose your talent because you went 21 games just scoring one goal. The talent is there. The question is regaining that confidence – that comes with training and time and finding the back of the net. One of our main focuses is getting the best out of the players, to free themselves and exploit their talent. You just have to persist.'
