Ancelotti downplays title charge

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has downplayed talk of his team making a renewed bid for the Premier League after winning at Blackpool last night.

The Blues won 3-1 against the relegation threatened Seasiders, and are now nine points behind Manchester United with a game in hand. They also have to go to Old Trafford, and with United tottering after three defeats in five games, it has been suggested that Chelsea’s title defence isn’t dead yet. However Ancelotti says that his primary concern is getting into the top four, and with Tottenham breathing down their necks, that’s understandable.

‘Our aim at this moment is to stay in the top four,' he said. 'We are closer to Manchester United but we have to prepare for the next game and prepare game by game.

‘The game was not easy. Blackpool were in the game until we scored the penalty and also at the end they were pressuring us a lot and we could not relax. Now we have nine points and another game [in hand] against Birmingham but it is too far to think we can come back in to fight for the title. To take it game by game is easier for us.’
