Alonso hands in written transfer request

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has handed in an official transfer request as he looks to secure a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. The La Liga club have already declared their interest in the 27-year-old Spain international.

The Liverpool Echo reports that Alonso submitted a written transfer request earlier today as he looks to resolve his future ahead of the coming Premier League season. Rafael Benitez underlined earlier this month that he didn't want to sell the talented former Real Sociedad player, but could be convinced to sell if Madrid are willing to up their initial offer of £24m.

Alonso joined Liverpool back in 2004 for £10.7m and has been one of the club's better players over the last couple of seasons. However, Benitez came close to selling the midfielder to Arsenal last summer as he looked to finance a failed bid for Gareth Barry.

Yesterday Liverpool sold Alvaro Arbeloa to Real Madrid for £3.5m and they are also expected to offload another fullback, Andrea Dossena, to Napoli by the end of the week for £4m. If Alonso does move to Spain, Liverpool will be short of talent in midfield with the disappointing Lucas most likely to plug the gap.
