Abramovich will be stepping up his role at Chelsea
How we would love to be a fly on the Chelsea dressing room wall right now. Stepping into Mourinho's shoes is Avram Grant, former Israel manager and close personal friend of Abramovich, who is in the unenviable position of having a hard act to follow.
Even Prime Minister Gordon Brown felt the need to comment on Mourinho's departure, issuing a statement declaring, "Jose Mourinho has made a significant contribution to British football in a short period of time and he's also one of the great characters of the game."
Last night's discussions resulted in Chelsea releasing a statement that Mourinho had left the club by "mutual consent". However Mourinho has been reported as saying that the phrase should be looked up in the dictionary. The man is walking sound byte gold and the British sports press will no doubt miss his classic one liners. Some of his best include:
“Look at my haircut — I’m ready for war”
“Please don’t call me arrogant, but I’m European champion and I think I’m a special one.”
“If I wanted an easy job I would have stayed at Porto: beautiful blue chair, the Champions League trophy, God and after God, me.”
