A draw would have been a travesty

You could never claim that Sir Alex Ferguson was a diplomatic soul, and after his Manchester United side’s 3-2 win over Liverpool yesterday afternoon, he lived up to his reputation of being spectacularly graceless.

Fergie gave Liverpool no credit for their spirited fight back to recover from 2-0 down to almost snatch a draw at Old Trafford, which seems pretty harsh even by his standards. Still, Dimitar Berbatov completed his hat-trick six minutes from time to prevent what he would have considered a ‘travesty’ from taking place.

‘From thinking to myself 'it's going to be 10', we ended up level at 2-2,’ he said after the game. ‘It was a travesty of a scoreline then - but a great result at the end.

‘Liverpool didn't offer anything and depended on decisions from the linesman to get back in the game. Edwin van der Sar had no saves to make, Paul Scholes controlled the midfield and we looked dangerous up front, with Dimitar and Nani - I couldn't see us losing the game.’
