We ran across a bit of a language barrier trying to tell an American acquaintance of ours exactly what “derby” means.
“Oh, you mean like a Subway series?”
It seems that each US metropolitan area has its own name for baseball derbies. When the Chicago Cubs play the White Sox it’s a Crosstown Classic. The Yankees and the Mets play in a Subway Series and in LA, it’s a Freeway Series. Or should that be a Gridlock Series?
This got us thinking that perhaps we could start giving proper names to some of our biggest derbies. How about the Red or Dead Derby (Man U vs Liverpool)? Or the Enders and Benders (Arsenal vs Chelsea)?
Any ideas for derby names?
